The Labrador Retriever has been voted the most popular dog in America for 25 years in a row! There must be some very good reasons. And there are!
One of the Wonder Dog Gear founders is a Labrador Retriever and that’s not even in the list of 7 reasons. But it’s a big one around here for us!
They are known as not too big and not too small, but just the right size for an active family. Males are 22-24” in height and 60-75 lbs and females are 21-23” in height and 55-70 lbs. Labs can be quite happy in a house with a large yard to an apartment. That is given the right amount of exercise. *side note, there have beens studies where apartment dogs get more exercise because their people take them out all the time.
Labs are classified in the AKC sporting group, which means they are will to retrieve anything. They were bred as hunting dogs, but since most don’t have that on their list of sports they actually do these days, they love to pick up on just about any other games you want to play. Labs are up for fetch or any game you want to play with them.
My Labrador would do this I have no doubt, because every time I’m with her by the ocean we are so lucky to live by, when she sees someone she thinks might be too far out in the water she wants to jump in and save them. Norman who is a blind Labrador Retriever actually rescued a drowning teenager by following the sounds of her voice. Amazing.
There is a long history of Labs being service dogs searching out lost people, contraband, being sight dogs. Their loyal nature leaves them by your side in sickness and health and ready to join whatever it is you are doing. Sitting by your side in silence in the moments when you need it most is high on their list as well.
Labrador Retrievers are steady tempered and dependable with everyone.
They love to play. Of course early socialization is important and introducing dogs in the right way in neutral space like a park, walking or in motion is best.
They are a gentle and patient breed and with the right socialization and training they love, love, love people and kids. It's one of the greatest childhood friends one could have. Of course never leave your child unattended with a dog you don’t know.
Labs are loyal, they love food, they love toys and all these go into why they are easy to train. Honestly, labradors love to please. You show them what makes you happy and they do it. Over and over and over.
